About China Business Limited

35 years of building trust across borders

We are a Hong Kong-based food ingredients broker and sourcing intelligence company. Independent, relationship-driven, and category-specific — since 1991.

Our story so far

Built on the ground. Grown through trust.

China Business Limited was established in Hong Kong to do one thing well: help international buyers source food ingredients from China with confidence. Not through paperwork and certificates alone — but through genuine on-the-ground presence, long-term supplier relationships, and the kind of practical intelligence that only comes from being there.

Over 35 years, we have grown from a single-market focus to serving buyers across 60+ countries — while staying deliberately lean, independent, and category-specific. We have never tried to source everything. We source what we know: AgarAgar, dehydrated garlic, and cassia & cinnamon.

The world of food ingredient sourcing has changed enormously since we started — more regulation, more complexity, more risk. But the fundamentals haven't changed: relationships matter, ground reality trumps paper, and trust is built slowly and lost fast. That's still what we're built on.

Founded in Hong Kong
China Business Limited incorporated on 26 September 1991 — established as a specialist trade bridge between China food ingredient suppliers and international buyers.

Category focus established
Narrowed specialisation to spices and dehydrated vegetables — depth over breadth became our defining operational principle.
2000s
60+ countries served
International buyer base expanded across Asia, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and the Americas. CBL introduced 25kg carton packaging for cassia, setting a new standard that became industry-wide.

Next generation — Regency Spices
Sunit Dattani (fourth generation) establishes Regency Spices Ltd — extending the family's presence in the ingredients trade.
2026
Specialist broker model formalised
CBL formally transitions from principal trader to specialist food ingredients broker and agent — giving buyers transparent choice between commission-based brokerage and fee-based agency services.
Who we are

Independent. Lean. Category-specific.

🏠

Hong Kong Based

Operating from Hong Kong since 1991 — at the crossroads of international trade and Chinese commerce. Operational relationships with suppliers across China have been built over 25+ years, some through former direct operations now independently run.

🎯

Category Specialists

We don't source everything. We source three categories — AgarAgar, dehydrated garlic, and cassia & cinnamon — with 35 years of accumulated knowledge in each. For established clients, we may consider additional products on a case-by-case basis. Depth, not breadth.

⚖️

Independently Aligned

Our conflict-of-interest protections are structural and documented. When you engage us, we work for you — not for the supplier, not for the market, not for anyone else.

What we stand for

Four principles we don't compromise on

These aren't marketing statements. They are the operational commitments that have defined how we work for 35 years — and continue to define every engagement.

01

Ground reality over paper compliance

Certificates are a starting point, not an endpoint. We go to the factory floor — unannounced — to verify what is actually happening. A certificate tells you what someone declared. We tell you what we saw.

02

Transparency in every engagement

Our fees are pre-agreed. Our commission is pre-disclosed. Our conflict-of-interest commitments are in writing. You should never wonder what we're earning or whose side we're on.

03

Relationships built over decades

Our supplier relationships span decades — not directories. We know the factories, the management, the seasonal realities, and the production patterns. That depth is what makes our intelligence useful rather than generic.

04

Honest verdicts, clearly stated

We give three verdicts: continue, watch, or avoid. We don't soften findings to protect supplier relationships or secure repeat business. If a factory has problems, we say so — plainly and in writing.

Our approach to quality

Quality is not a certificate. It's a pattern.

The food ingredient industry relies heavily on certificates, lab reports, and audit tick-boxes. These have value — but they have limits. A lab report tests one sample. A certificate captures one moment. An audit can be prepared for. Our quality approach is built on continuity — ongoing observation across seasons and shipments, so we can identify patterns rather than snapshots.

Unannounced factory visits

We visit without pre-notice so you see normal operations — not a prepared showroom.

Four-layer verification

External, internal, regulatory, and documented quality — a supplier who passes on one can fail on another.

ISO 22000:2018 certified

SGS-audited food safety management system — renewed annually, covering our brokerage and agency operations.

Plain-language verdicts

Continue / watch / avoid — no ambiguity, no softening, no agenda.

"We don't just verify that a certificate exists. We verify that the reality behind the certificate matches what it claims."

Legal Standing

Certificate of Incorporation — Hong Kong

Incorporated in Hong Kong on 26 September 1991 under the Companies Ordinance. Full legal standing as a Hong Kong-registered company for over 34 years.

A note on factory certifications: Some manufacturing facilities in our network hold BRC, IFS, and equivalent certifications. These are the factories' own certifications — not CBL's. CBL does not hold BRC certification. We are direct and clear about this distinction because blurring it would mislead buyers about the basis of our quality assurance work.
